Salmon and Bear, Newtown

The name Salmon and Bear conjures mixed signals about the food that the restaurant serves. Does the menu revolve around fish (the 'Salmon' component), or does it have more of a hunter-gather wilderness theme (the 'Bear')? Or does it go surf and turf and offer both? The answer is in the 'Salmon' part of the name. Salmon and Bear relies on the humble fish as the hero and main focus of the menu.

Café Del Mar, Darling Harbour

I always look forward to the Aussie summer because it means barbecue feasts, long days at the beach, and, of course, lots and lots of seafood. And what better place to celebrate summer than at a restaurant and bar aptly named Café del Mar, the name of which means café of the sea!

Il Goloso Ristorante Pizzera at Haberfield Post

If you were to ask me what my favourite Italian food was, I wouldn't be able to answer you. I absolutely love Italian food, whether it be pasta, pizza, arancini, pane (bread) or any of the various antipasto delicacies. Actually, that's a lie.... I would probably say Gelato, but that is another type of food that deserves its very own category...

But of all Italian food, it would be extremely hard to me to choose just one that I adore. It's good eating out at Italian restaurants with a big family because you're always guaranteed to order a wide range of meals, which means that I hardly ever miss out on anything that I love. Must orders whenever we eat Italian are always a seafood dish of some sort, whether it be a Spaghetti Marinara or a Frutti di Mare pizza, most of the time accompanied by a lovely parmesan and rucola salad and crunchy, aromatic garlic bread.

Twelve, Newtown

When you're sitting home with nothing to do for the day, what do you resort to? Reading? Listening to music? Catching up on your favourite TV show? Being on holidays with lots of spare time, I started watching Gossip Girl recently and managed to finish the first season on DVD this week. It was a good way to spend my time, but when a beautiful day calls from outside, sometimes sitting holed up in front of a TV just doesn't cut it. Cue an outing!

On a bright, sunny Saturday when we had nothing to do we decided to go out to Newtown for a wander and to have lunch. Being the hipster suburb that it is, there's no shortage of good eateries in the area, lined up side by side along King Street.Twelve is nestled among them, occupying almost two shopfront lengths with its open-air seating and dark, subtle decor. The signage oozes the air of a funky, seaside cafe.

Paris Seafood Cafe, La Perouse

What better day to visit La Perouse than on Father's Day? I'd never visited this area before, but driving through the eastern suburbs to get to there we passed lots of places that I vaguely remember from our previous travels.

We'd planned to go to the area for a nice Father's Day fish n' chips on the beach, a prospect made all the more agreeable given the beautiful weather we were granted with upon waking on Sunday morning. We reached La Perouse just after 1pm, driving up to join a beeline of cars that all seemed to be going to the same place we were, with the same brilliant lunch idea. After we managed to park (following a lesiurely cruise at 5km/h looking for a parking spot), we made our way down the hill to our destination, tummies grumbling, to get lunch.
